The Affordable Care Act

On June 28, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”).  The primary focal points of this legislation are to provide all Americans with affordable health insurance and set forth specific initiatives to reduce wasteful expenditures in the system through better coordination of care.  Your primary care physician “PCP” will be a key component in managing your healthcare.  The ACA phases in multiple initiatives over a period of time to in order to accomplish these objectives.  A timeline can be seen at www.healthcare.gov/law/index.html.

Under the new ACA rules, by 2014, there will be approximately 40 million more patients brought in to the insurance system.  All of these patients will ultimately be encouraged to see physicians within selected networks.  Private insurance patients (including Medicare Advantage) will ultimately be encouraged to see practitioners within Independent Practice Associations (“IPAs”) while Medicare and Medicaid patients will be encouraged to see practitioners within an Accountable Care Organization (“ACO”) network:
